Seeing your Design Fair come to life
Fair Director, Downtown Design
When I took over as the Fair Director for Downtown Design in January of this year, I was aware of the challenge that lay ahead. Going from the Editor in Chief of Harper’s Bazaar Interiors; meeting designers, researching trends, working with brands and editing products – it was the right grounding for taking all those ideas off the page and into the third dimension.
Seeing the venue for the first time yesterday, all 6,000 square meters of it – twice the size of last year and in our new venue at the Dubai Design District (d3) nothing could have prepared me. For the last eight months, working from a floorplan, reviewing renders of exhibition stands, talking about branding and the visitor experience, it was all ‘on paper’ – somehow comfortably contained in a medium I have been very used to. Now, to see these exhibition stands -from the 50 square meter booths of our six Design Weeks to the 700 square meter Italian Pavilion – I’m literally blown away by how incredible it all looks.
This year, our brands have outdone themselves in scope and ambition; with larger, more sophisticated concepts – debuting new collections and products in the city for the first time. I’m posting updates on my Instagram account@RueKothari – so check that out for daily sneak peaks at the venue, and will be snapchatting from the event from this weekend.
